Becoming a parent is an exciting yet overwhelming experience, filled with numerous decisions to make. From choosing the right creams and bottles to deciding on the perfect diaper brand, every choice plays a crucial role in the well-being of your little one. In this journey of parenthood, my family and I found ourselves reevaluating our choices, particularly in the realm of diapering, as we encountered unexpected challenges.

Pampers and Diaper Keg Traditions

Initially, we opted for Pampers, a widely recommended brand, to navigate the early stages of parenting. In the Midwest, where we reside, unique traditions like the "diaper keg" became part of our celebration. Diaper kegs involve guests bringing diaper packs as tickets to enjoy unlimited access to a keg of beer, ensuring new parents are well-stocked. This unconventional but practical approach left us with an abundance of diapers.

A Skin Concern Sparks a Change

However, three months into parenthood, our son Zion developed a severe eczema rash, prompting a reevaluation of all products that touched his sensitive skin. This led us to explore natural, fragrance-free options and switch to "non-toxic" disposable diapers like Hello Bello. While his skin improved, my commitment to providing the best for Zion led me to contemplate a more sustainable choice – cloth diapering.

The Call for Sustainability

As a long-time advocate for the environment, the thought of contributing to landfill waste through disposable diapers weighed heavily on my conscience. At seven months old, Zion's diapering journey is evolving, and cloth diapering seems to be the next logical step.

Navigating the Cloth Diapering Landscape

The exploration of cloth diapering options was an overwhelming process. With various types like all-in-ones, pocket diapers, and hybrids, I delved into online platforms to educate myself. Pocket diapers, allowing customization with inserts, seemed promising for Zion's "Power Pooper" tendencies.

Affordable Options and Brand Choices

After scouring Reddit, YouTube, and Google, recommendations for affordable pocket diaper brands were abundant. Nora's Nursery, La Petite Ourse (LPO), and Kinder Cloth diaper co stood out. While Nora's Nursery was praised for affordability, I opted for LPO and Kinder Cloth due to their cost-effective yet quality offerings.

Inserts and Completing the Setup

Selecting inserts involved considering bamboo, hemp, cotton, and microfiber options. Green Mountain Diapers cotton inserts and handmade hemp inserts from Etsy rounded out my choices. To complete our cloth diapering setup, I invested in a wet bag and bamboo liner. The ALVABABY 2-pack wet dry bag and a roll of Wegreeco bamboo liner complemented our cloth diapering journey.

The Commitment to Sustainability

As I eagerly await the arrival of our cloth diapering supplies, the total investment of $131 for only four diapers highlights the commitment to sustainability. With the soft launch into cloth diapering, our aim is to gradually incorporate this eco-friendly choice into our routine. Even reducing one disposable diaper a day makes a significant impact on landfill waste.
